The Best of Times is Bill Hannan’s story of the Great Expansion of Victorian secondary schools in the 1950s and 1960s. Hannan was both teacher and union activist during the expansion. He recalls with humour and anecdote the years of direct action and strikes when the union (the old VSTA) fought the government to gain professional status for teachers, and at the same time joined forces with the department to free schools from outdated thinking about curriculum.
